Guilty...

Who's guilty? That'd be me. No, I didn't brawl outside the Orlando courthouse for tickets, but I have spent the last 2 weeks glued to HLN (a station I didn't know existed before this circus) and live tweeting all throughout the trial. Nancy Grace (who needs grief counseling over her loss) went on about "little kee-lee" and made it clear she'd be a strong suspect when a freed Casey Anthony goes missing. Yes, it's gross that so many Americans and international people with too much damn time on their hands alike, have been obsessed with the Casey Anthony trial.

It started with me doing preliminary casting for the inevitable Lifetime Movie (maybe a mini-series would do a better job of feeding this voracious audience at this point?). I was calling Alyssa Milano to play the most unpopular individual next to Bin Laden, Ben Affleck with a stash and goatee to play the accused molester brother, Edie Falco to make us sob for the grieving grandma, and my fellow tweep, @Paul_DPW threw out James Brolin as the accused molester father/accused adulterer with a total hag/accused dumper of his own granddaughter's body. And you think you had a tough week.

The more I watched the trial, the more I thought, what a pack of buffoons trying this case. Who didn't want to punch Baez in his smug, fat face? And why was Linda Drane-Burdick being hostile to everyone, including her own witnesses (an excellent example of why so many people have misgivings about female litigators). This is the best that Florida has? Poor Florida.

More than that, why did the state bring this case against Casey Anthony with no hard evidence... at all? And didn't they know first-degree murder was a long shot on circumstantial evidence? Given that, they could have at least made an effort to try to prove that Caylee was in the care of her mother Casey at the time of her death... never saw that brought up at trial, making the second count of aggravated child abuse off the table as well. Oh Florida!

Do I think she's responsible for her daughter's death? Probably. Do I agree with the verdict? Absolutely. There was no evidence directly linking Casey to Caylee's death and we should all be grateful that we live in a country where trials are not decided by emotion, but by facts. This very unpopular decision was the correct one and I commend the jury for having the courage to uphold the law as it was written.

If you want to be angry at someone, be angry at the prosecution. Their evidence was simply insurmountable... and christ, I don't have a JD and I saw that all day long.

And let's face it, everyone who's throwing an emotionally-raged fit over a woman they've never met, will be the same people tuning in to watch the Casey Anthony reality show on TLC, "You're Killin' Me, Casey!"

Dog Gone Grief

It's been 43 days since Bailey left. I have never felt such a profound sense of sadness, emptiness, and grief. I've never cried so much or felt more confused in my life. I know that pets in our lives are a short-term bargain, but it's so difficult to understand how the greatest part of you can just walk out of your life one day.

I'm grateful that I knew every day of Bailey's physical life, that I did know exactly what I had and exactly how lucky I was. I used to ask Bailey out loud, "Why me? How did I get so lucky to have you?" I've said so many times that Bailey is perfect, and he was. And in some funny ways his passing was perfect, too. I had been on break from work from December 18th to February 7th. Yes, a very long break where I got to be home with Bailey. He began to decline on February 7th. He passed February10th and I had to be on set the next morning, February 11th shooting, "A Series of Unfortunate People." As horrible as it was, it would have been more horrible to be home without Bailey and without that wonderful distraction. The veterinarian who put Bailey down was the biggest douche-bag in veterinary medicine. Even in the darkest moment of my life with Bailey, there was something to laugh about.

About two years ago, I began grieving his death. I know that sounds nuts, but every few months, I'd lay awake in bed, thinking about the fact that he'd leave one day, and I'd just cry and cry. Of course, he hated this. Bailey was so full of love, but oh boy, he HATED it when I cried.

I will not go into the details of Bailey's passing because it's just too painful. I will say we spent the last day together outside, Bailey, Phil and I. He had a chicken breast and held a tennis ball for me. He had two bad days and then he told me under no uncertain terms that he was ready to go, and I listened.

Every day has felt like a bad dream. I feel like a kid who was running around having a great life who had no idea just how very sad life can be. I remember looking at random people, not understanding how they could be smiling and happy when they didn't even have a dog. Happiness without Bailey just didn't seem possible.

Everyone who offered advice to me said much of the same 1) It just takes time. 2) You'll never really get over it. And they're right. Time has helped. It still often feels like time can't pass quickly enough. I still have moments when I'd really like for my physical life to be over so I can be with Bailey again. And I absolutely will never get over losing Bailey. It is a part of me that will always remain changed.

Several days after Bailey passed I made an appointment with an animal communicator to talk with Bailey. For me, that was very stupid and an act of desperation. Very soon after, a film producer/director asked me to do the voice of a dog for one of his movies. I remember thinking as I stood there performing large chunks of dialogue to a big microphone, in a "dog voice," how ridiculous it was to try to put human words to a dog's train of thinking. If dogs could really talk, it wouldn't be much more than, "Life is good. I love you. What's for dinner?" And trying to make human words speak for a dog was not helpful to me. I regret having kept that appointment with the animal communicator, but it did teach me something very important: Stop looking outside of yourself for the answers. You already have them and Bailey told you EVERYTHING.

Today I no longer fear death. I no longer have a sense that there is something life can throw at me that I can't handle. I no longer stress about things that are unimportant - losing the best thing in my life shined a very bright light on how insignificant all the crap I worry about really is. I understand that no one can ever really know how I feel, because no one else is me and no one else is Bailey. That relationship, like all pet relationships, is so unique and so special that no one else really should understand how I feel. It's just between me and Bailey. Today I am convinced more than ever that Phil should be cannonized, St. Phil of Lomita, and if ever I was meant to spend my life with another person, it is Phil Han. And today I understand that having a dog in my life is imperative.

Humphrey will be the next dog in my life. Bailey was perfect so I'm convinced Humphrey will be a major pain in the ass, but we'll love him anyway. And Bailey will always be the best thing that ever happened to me.

Buckeyes, Please!

No, I am not a raging fan of the Ohio Buckeyes, but I sure do have a thing for these, my favorite treat I make only at the holidays! They were introduced to me as a child in Connecticut by the Nebesky Family. It never occurred to me that I could actually make them, until my sister started making them around the holidays.

The reaction? They're peanut butter and chocolate CRACK. People go NUTS for them! Such a huge hit! Which is great, because leftovers are not exactly figure-friendly...

OK, so I'm officially on vacation today and I'm making these for the second time this holiday season. If you know me personally, I'm not much of a cook... to say the least, which is why I love this recipe even more... NO COOKING involved! Here goes:

BUCKEYES

1 (16 oz.) box confectioners' sugar

1/2 c. melted butter
2 c. peanut butter
3 c. crushed Rice Krispies
1 (12 oz.) bag Nestle's real chocolate morsels
1/2 stick paraffin wax (note: I've NEVER used this, with no problem!)

Mix sugar, butter, peanut butter and Rice Krispies in a large bowl. Blend thoroughly with hands until dough forms. Roll into small balls (approximately 1/4 inch in diameter). Place on an ungreased cookie sheet in the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes to harden.

Melt the chocolate morsels and paraffin wax together in a double boiler. After the chocolate is melted, use a toothpick to dip each ball into the chocolate, leaving an oval space on top to make it look like an Ohio buckeye. Makes approximately 100 buckeyes.

Regarding melting the chocolate... I've had more success just melting it in the microwave. And I probably only put about half the chocolate on each piece compared to the ones pictured (shocking coming from me, I know!)

Oh! And, I recommend putting the rice krispies in a ziploc bag and pounding them out to crush them before adding them to the mix - much easier than crushing them within the mix.

Oh, how lovely was our 3 night trip to Lake Arrowhead!!! For the first time I actually recognized how lovely it is to not have to worry about making dinner (ahem, though that's rarely a task I rise to the occasion of) how nice it is to not have to do the dishes (though I now have a dishwasher!) And to not have to wake up early to go anywhere... although when I have to wake up really early to go anywhere, it's usually an acting job, which has me bouncing out of bed with joy :0)

And yes, Phil and I celebrated our second anniversary and I am so happy to have so much love in my life. So much that I cried two of the three nights because I missed Bailey SO much.

Details? Three great nights of sleep at the Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa. It was beautiful and wonderful. Two fantastic breakfasts at Belgian Waffle Works on the lake in Arrowhead Village. Yum! Thank you to my wonderful manager Joy Stevenson for the tip! One really cute, super-discounted, new Coach purse from the Coach Outlet in Arrowhead Village and one relaxing, wonderful lemonade mint massage at the Spa of the Pines. Yay! Oh, and many, many duck-feeding sessions lakeside. Um, why do I love to feed the ducks so much? Especially the baby ones! What? Baby?!

Isn't it something the way your surroundings can color the way you see everything? Well, at least it's true for me, so it's imperative I stay out of jail cells and mental wards as long as possible.

We have moved! No more paranoid, mildly insane co-tenant with unruly hair and psychotic dogs dictating when I can do laundry! Our new home is so beautiful, it makes me so happy every morning that I live there. Ah, serenity!

Speaking of serenity, we're off to Lake Arrowhead in a few days to celebrate our two year anniversary! Last year it was so great to make the trip to "get away from it all." This year, there's nothing I want to get away from. Yay new house!!

Yay For Sodium!

Could it be??? A return to blogging?!

Yes. I started to feel like I was using my blog as an excuse to bitch my heart out, which is just not a good daily practice. Alas, I've missed it! I've missed your comments! So can we talk about SALT?

I loved it. Not just because it was a relentlessly exciting film, but also because it was an awesome action flick staring a WOMAN. Yes, I have a thing for women in film. No, not just the organization that hands out really impressive gift bags at their events, but the actually ladies that grace the screen. That said, Angelina Jolie in all her glory, was one of about three women who appeared in the movie, among a sea of dudes. Expected? Sure, it's the norm. But what I didn't expect was how thrilled I was to watch a hand-cuffed Angelina Jolie knock out two police officers and take over their cop car in the middle of a high speed chase. Or... something like that. But I remember thinking, this is so much more worth watching her do this rather than Bruce Willis!

I also kept picturing her slew of children watching their mom be a total badass, kill dozens of people, kick lots of ass and run what looked like about three marathons. I once saw my mom chase my sister around the entire perimeter of our backyard with a wooden spoon. Not the same.

Alright! Have a great Sunday night! I'm ready to watch episode 2 of Mad Men with an open mind.

Today I Saw...

One of my best, best friends I hadn't seen in a long time, her gorgeous new Mercedes, Bailey happily go on a longer than usual walk, that Women in Film does a really great job with their gift bags (such a score, thank you Erin!!), that all of my pants still fit after my enchilada fiesta today (shocking!), yesterday's Friday Night Lights, Frances McDormand's first film Blood Simple which exceeded my expectations, some neighbors, an episode of "Dexter" which I'm really getting into (thank you Netflix via the Wii!!), and that filing for unemployment really isn't as frustrating as I make it out to be.

Not a bad Saturday! Cheers!

Bring On the Clouds!

June Gloom? How is that possible? I don't have to be in a classroom again until July 6th!

And truth be told, I'm a huge fan of cloud cover. We are inundated with sunshine in Los Angeles. Enough already! I see this relief as a well-deserved treat before we get swallowed by the sun and heat of July and August in SoCal.

Did I mention I don't have air conditioning? In fact, never have in LA. Landlords always say, "AC? Oh, you don't need it by the beach." Um, FALSE! I so believe in the healing powers of central air conditioning.

And this my friends, is why my body rejects the word, "valley."

Well, believe it or not I have little to say today as I am feeling... ick! We'll leave it at that.

However, a huge congrats to Working Bug Productions for being selected as Independent Webisode Finalists by the Producers Guild of America for the Producers Challenge! Woo-hoo! Episode One of Road to the Altar, entitled "The Wedding Planner" (guest starring myself!) will screen tonight at Fox Studios alongside other finalists including Horrible People, True Blood, and Heroes. Yay! So looking forward to it!

Would also like to send huge congratulations out to my wonderful, talented, very good friend Jen Nikolaisen who is shooting a commercial for Aviva Life Insurance today! GO JEN!!

And thank you so much to my wonderful students for a great last day of class, not to mention a generous gift! I will miss you until July 6th!

And I would be remiss not to say good-bye to my second favorite Golden Girl, Rue McClanahan. You were so lovely and loved and will always be fondly remembered for your fearless talent! Indeed, thank you for being a friend.

Real Writing Housewives

It occurred to me today... I HAVE NOTHING TO WATCH! Everything I love has either had a series or season finale!

What to do? OK, fine the Real Housewives are still on, but man, New Jersey is super weak... A pack of uneducated, lame women who sometimes get drunk and violent. For the most part, much like watching paint dry.

New York, always good, but about to end. Although, that should be one hell of a season finale. And speaking of the Real Housewives, while browsing on Amazon.com yesterday, I came across "Body by Bethenny," which just looks like yoga (don't think Bethenny Frankel had much to do with creating yoga), but what I also noticed, was how high the Skinny Girl's books were rated by Amazoners. I saw at least four books by Bethenny Frankel, all with an average rating of about 4 out of 5 stars.

Then I noticed that even mildly retarded, table flipping, New Jersey Mafia wife, Theresa Giudice has a cookbook out called, Skinny Italian: Eatit and Enjoy it Live La Bella Vita and Look Great, Too!

Also carries impressive ratings! And hey! She can write! Well, perhaps that's true, but I'm pretty sure the other name on the book, Heather Maclean was responsible for any successful verb-subject agreement that occurs on those pages.

Then! New York Housewife Alex McCord's book she co-wrote with exceedingly metrosexual husband Simon, Little Kids, Big City: Tales from a Real House in New York City. Um, they live in Brooklyn. Hope that's part of an explained joke on the inside cover. Huge ratings! Five stars out of 5!!!

Wait a minute... are amazon reviewers just really partial to Real Housewives and anything, any of them, might write or sling? A tad more research gave me the answer, which is a very clear NO.

Yep, two more New York Housewives have books out, which Amazoners... do not like. First we have the much anticipated and mocked, Class with the Countess, by Countess LuAnn de Lesseps, which recived an average rating of 2 out of 5 stars. Nah, I wouldn't want to read it either, and she's so damn condescending on the show, I'm sure I'd hate every page of it.

Lastly I glanced at Jill Zarin's ratings for the book she co-wrote with her mother and sister, Secrets of a Jewish Mother: Real Advice, Real Stories, Real Love. Yep, well not much real love from Amazon reviewers who gave the read a 2 out of 5 star rating. Most of the reviewers gave it 1 star and were rather scathing, calling the advice "cold" and "calculating."

There you have it: a show on Bravo does not equal successful book reviews.

However! That is NO reason to start recording music! Step away from the microphone LuAnn!!

Smile?

Like so many other people with teeth, I often try to find ways of making my smile whiter and brighter. Being a huge fan of coffee and red wine makes regular attention to the choppers necessary.

In the past I've gone to a dentist for that, "brighter smile in an hour" treatment (popular one now is called Zoom), which I found equally effective, expensive and painful! Decided it wasn't for me, my budget, or pain threshold.

I used a 5-minute teeth bleaching gel called, Plus White, which offered me acceptable results given the time investment, but the improvement lasted little longer than the time investment.

Then of course, I've tried Crest Whitestrips, which I've managed to swallow in the past when I fell asleep waiting for the magic to happen. Recently I bought the CVS generic version (we're still in a recession kids, don't judge), which is supposed to dissolve in 5-7 minutes. Well, that's true if dissolving means the strip on your teeth turns into a gooey mess that you have to wipe off.

Anyone else have an affordable suggestion? My smile is waiting.

Go Ahead, Spam Me

Anyone else still puzzled at how your spam box fills with urgent letters from Nigeria, requesting your help, in God's name?

I don't understand. Email is nothing new. Spam is an expected nuisance, like children selling candy outside grocery stores and post offices. Personally I've seen at least two different "Dateline" episodes exposing the Reverend collecting fees before he can send the moron's inheritance. This "practice" is no secret!

Let's see, here are the scenarios used I can recall the best: a distant relative of yours has passed and left you a large inheritance for which you need to pay fees before you can receive said enormous dollar amount, someone has to transfer money from their country to yours and would be happy to pay you a hefty fee if in God's name,you'll help out, someone is ill and needs your charitable financial help.

People still fall for this. The last Dateline expose' I saw on the topic, featured an educated woman in Connecticut who bought the inheritance bait. She lost $200,000.00 in "fees" even though Chris Hansen confronted the Nigerian ambassador living in Greenville, SC.

Maybe what's more difficult to understand than why people still fall for this, is why from time to time I can't help but respond to these emails with a well-deserved, "Go f*** yourself."

Leave it to me.

Weeding

I have a newfound love for a show that's not new, but new to me. I love "Weeds"! Thanks to the ingenious Netflix-via-Wii phenomena entering my living room, access to every episode of every season is at my disposal on demand. Love!

Yes, it goes flying into the absurd at times, but that doesn't bother me. In fact, most of the time, I'd rather not see real-life difficult, problematic scenarios played out on my TV. A widowed mother of two from the suburbs, chauffeuring two thugs in a drive-by shooting, that's what my viewing time needs. Over the past few days, I've actually thought, "Sure, this is bad, but nothing near as bad as what Nancy goes through!"

Ridiculous? Yes, but mostly, so am I.

Shooting the Head

After a number of years in this business, which will go undisclosed, I feel comfortable saying it doesn't matter who you go to for headshots, if you don't bring yourself to the picture, you won't get "the shot." But what the hell does that mean?

It means that your headshot should capture your eyes, show something going on behind your eyes, and completely look like you. Not some character you think you should be playing, just you. And with all I know and thought I knew about headshots, I was more than enlightened when I watched this SAG Foundation video, "Your Headshot From Every Angle," taped earlier this month.

Guests included casting directors Stuart Stone, Marci Liroff, and Geralyn Flood and photographers Sara Corwin, Alan Weissman, and Kevin Major Howard. Among many other things, I learned that Sara Corwin is really defensive about her high prices and Kevyn Major Howard might be slightly off-balance and/or an evangelist.

Bottom line, if you're an actor, it's totally worth it to see what they're saying.

Idolizing Crystal

Very excited to find out who the next American Idol will be!

I watch the performances every week (fast forwarding through the plethora of Ford infomercials, starring the top 12), but I only vote on the night of the finale.

Can I be honest? (Of course I can, it's my blog!) I voted for Crystal Bowersox and here's why; 1. If she were to make an album (or when she makes an album), I wouldn't buy the whole thing but I'd likely download some of her songs from iTunes. 2. I think she's really talented and unique. 3. She's a woman. 4. I've watched the show every week this season and I still can't remember what the guy's name is she's up against tonight. He might be forgettable.

It's true, I'm something of a feminist and that does bleed over into the way I vote. Of course, were she not likable she'd not be getting my support.

That said, one man I have great respect for has sadly given his last sharp-tongued, often painfully honest, critique. I don't care what anyone says, Simon Cowell was spot on in his assessments of performances throughout American Idol. Most of them were just too American to accept what was coming out of his mouth.

Need a Break, Lake Now!

The law of attraction is really at work with me today. I am OVERWHELMED with all of my end of the semester stuff, finals, submitting my films, writing meetings, meetings, work, meetings, work, attendance records, work, work, UGH! So, of course today, when I'm hurrying, arms full, with a trail of students behind me to get from class to the office so I can help them with registration, a random woman stops me and the following ensues:

A: Hey, you a teacher?
B: Yes! Sorry, I...
A: What do you teach?
B: English as a Second Language.
A: Can I have some worksheets on, uh... subject-verb agreement?
B: Uh... well, I don't have any on me (and are you kidding me?)
A: Can you mail some to me at 5211 Lake...
B: (Is this really happening?) Uh... you'll need to write that down.

OK, what the hell just happened? Phil must have sensed my stress. An hour later he forwarded me our anniversary getaway reservation confirmation for Lake Arrowhead Resort. Ahh.

It's true. This too shall pass!

My Edgy Princess Unleashed!

Recently a friend sent me probably the coolest and most creative gift I've ever received. It was an

Edgy Princess Ring, which are handmade rings from France, made of glass. I am head over heels IN LOVE WITH IT!!

From the moment I opened the box, the experience began. The packaging was so carefully and beautifully created in their signature chocolate brown box with coordinating flower embellishments, I almost didn't want to open it!. So special! I just kept thinking what a GREAT and
special gift to receive!

I love big rings and silver, so this was perfect for me. Then I put it on. Love ensued. It fit my finger perfectly, but all the rings are size adjustable at the base, so you never have to worry about size when you're ordering. But what's cool is, because you adjust them at the base, they don't look at all like adjustable rings. They just look and feel really sturdy. And awesome!

I had never seen anything quite like it, so
I had to visit the website to find out more about this uber cool company. The Edgy Princess mission is "to bring our fabulous finds to every hip woman and girl out there. Why? Because there is an edgy princess inside us all." Yay!!

Mine is the Square Classic-Silver, but they have lots of other styles in lots of different colors. Other shapes include round, dome, rectangular, flower, flat, and plate. What's inside? Mine is filled with silver beads. Others are filled with colored water, pop art designs and water, and beads of different colors and shapes. So damn cool and chic!!

Cost? The rings range from $30 to $40. Not bad for my favorite accessory of all time.

One drawback. Everyone wants to know what's on your finger! I had to stop class twice on Thursday to answer questions about what was on my hand and where it could be purchased. I've also been stopped twice, once in the grocery store and once walking into an audition, about my ring. I'm getting used to it!

OK, two drawbacks, when you go to their website it is SO hard to pick one from the collection! They're all just too unique and fabulous!

And, turns out the folks at Edgy Princess are not just good at making amazing, eye-catching rings, but they're good people, too. A portion of all sales goes to charity.

LOST Without You

Does anyone else fear that that TV as we know it, is about to cease to be? Tonight we see the series finale of "LOST." One of my favorite shows for years now, which understandably needs to come to a close at some point, but it's still so sad to see it go. And I could probably handle that more easily if we weren't also about to say good-bye to "24," also a favorite since the pilot. I guess Jack Bauer needs kick ass elsewhere.

And perhaps I don't have a lot of support on this, but I LOVED ABC's "Flash Forward," which is sadly ending its first and last season this year. And don't get me started on FX's "Damages." It physically pains me to think I'll never get to see what the next move for Patty Hewes will be.

And then there's talk that "The Big Bang Theory" is the next "Friends." Are you kidding me? I watched that show once and could barely make it to the credits. That's supposed to be good TV these days??

Oh, but not to worry. The CW has announced a midseason series! It's a reality show called, "Shedding for the Wedding." Sure to be as engaging and inspiring as "The Bachelor" spinoff, "More to Love."

Sigh.

Good-bye LOST. I'm really pissed that you killed off Sun and Jin, but you were a great show. Make another good one, J.J. And fast!

Youthinize Me. Or Coolinize?

Last week I said to my boss, who is, well... older than me (could maybe be my mom), "Hey look, we have almost the same shoes on!" To which she responded, "Aren't you a little young for that?" I looked down at the brown mary jane- style flats I'd bought at Ross. Point well taken. I'm starting to have the style of a middle aged teacher. That's not so good.

Then there's the issue of what my agents keep saying about my headshots. "We want to see something more hip, contemporary. A more modern hairstyle."

Message received. I need a new hairstyle and if possible, a stylist.

Well, it's never nice to poke fun at the mentally ill, unless the mentally ill is a bitchy New York, ex-model, socialite-wanna-be who made the very unfortunate decision to display herself to the world on Bravo's "Real Housewives of New York." In case you missed last night's episode, Kelly Bensimon had a full-out unraveling session. Disturbing to watch someone talk in non-sensical terms, accuse another cast member of trying to kill her (a tiny, pregnant woman, no less) and accusing yet another of channeling the devil.

Yes, it was more sad than it was entertaining. Her response? "I had a breakthrough, not a breakdown." Whatever makes the voices in your head happy, Kelly. Now go do a cartwheel.

She also added that her "breakthrough" incident "makes for awesome TV. Can't argue there, but what about about her public perception? I recently heard a quote from Jill Zarin suggesting that it was best for Kelly not to return to the show because it's not doing anything positive for her. I couldn't agree more.

There you go ladies, looks aren't everything. Being mentally sound and not inflicting fear of what you might do, every time you walk into a room is highly underrated.

What if it Was You?

Sometimes I forget how lucky we are to be Americans. If you ask any one of my ESL students from various countries, including but not limited to; South Korea, Sri Lanka, Mexico, the Ivory Coast and Egypt, all of them will give you roughly the same answer. "I wanted more opportunities and a better life."

Sure, there are some cases in certain fields where Americans might leave America for the same reason, but really, we have pretty much everything here.

The immigration issue our country faces really comes down to one thing: Were you born in this country? Well, I was born in Massachusetts, a far cry from California. What if I was stuck in Massachusetts for the rest of my life? With no way to legally move somewhere else? What if I couldn't find a job in the field I wanted to go into in Massachusetts? What If I couldn't find any job at all? Or what if I could find a job, but it didn't pay enough to feed me or family or put a roof over our heads? What then? Would I try to move somewhere else (possibly Connecticut) even if it was illegal? Well for me, the answer is yes.

Nothing against the great state of Massachusetts, by the way!

I realize the seriousness of the immigration issue, but what none of us from the United States ever have to consider is, what if it was you? Would you do the same thing?

So grateful today! My wonderful students gave me a lovely send off for my last day at the mental health facility in Watts. Doughnuts and gifts, what more could I ask for? Oh yeah, Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings off now until July 6th. Umm... YAY!

Also SO grateful for my wonderful manager Joy Stevenson who is celebrating her birthday today! Yay Joy! Couldn't ask for someone better to be on my team.

AND I'm so grateful for my writing/producing partner Leigh Hall! We're putting the finishing touches on our first feature film script (comedy, but of course) and couldn't be more optimistic about it! Yay Leigh!

Lastly so grateful for and proud of Phil Han, whose recruiting business ZenSource is taking off! Oh, of course it is! It's Phil!

Good, Sheen Fun

While I'm not much of a "Charlie Sheen the person fan" (much like the people he marries), I'm not opposed to the work he does. He's funny, and though I'm continuously shocked to see how well "Two and a Half Men" does in the ratings, time and time again, I was even more floored when I heard the flurry of rumors about Sheen's imminent departure from the only thing in his life that seemed to be working.

Why the hell would he leave? Not enough money? Really? Honestly, how much money does someone need in this world? This is a question that's been on my mind since I saw Michael Moore's documentary Capitalism: A Love Story. How many homes, cars, boats and Manolo Blahniks does a person need before they feel fulfilled? The highest paid actor on TV, Charlie Sheen made $825,000 per episode last season. If he wasn't considering a full departure from acting altogether and it wasn't about money (so he claims), what was the two and a half month hold up all about?

Well, Charlie Sheen fans can all rest easy knowing "Two and a Half Men" will return for two more seasons. And although living large on his inflated paycheck, still facing domestic violence charges from a Christmas Holiday hassle (weapons included), with his wife Brooke Mueller, Sheen is living Lohan. And that's not good.

Getting My Phil

What Was That?

I've been guilty of correcting people's English without invitation to do so... I can't help it! It's my job to correct English. I can't help but resist the need to correct the speaker when I hear, "I haven't went there before." NOOO!! You haven't gone there before. Respect your past participles, people.

This is why I've had such a hard time listening to somewhat intelligent women on The Real Housewives of New York use their version of the present perfect tense. Or collectively fail to use it and use the present tense instead.
WHAT???

The first few times, I thought for sure I heard that wrong. She didn't say, "We know each other for 20 years." Clearly she wasn't enunciating and she actually, maybe through some blurry wine buzz said, "We've known each other for 20 years."

At last season's reunion show when Kelly was crying about her ex-boyfriend accusing her of domestic violence, she complained about the harm to her reputation, "My name! My name that I built since I'm a kid!" NO! Since you were a kid, you idiot.

But it's NOT just her! All of them do it and it drives me nuts. What's going on in English classes in New York schools? Or is it a regional dialect that so offends the ear? Ugh...

Veggie Me?

For some time now I've put off reading the book Skinny Bitch because I know it will turn me into at least a vegetarian, if not a vegan, and I just don't know if I could afford that. Not to mention how much it will disrupt my family routine.

I mean sure, I could stop eating meat, but then Phil and I would have to prepare two separate meals for dinner most of the time. And what about my Golden Retriever, Bailey? He's turning 13 this year. Am I supposed to expect him to suddenly change everything he's ever known about what's delicious, too?

Today I accidentally walked in the room while Phil was watching the documentary Food Inc. Couldn't take it. I love animals and I can't handle the way they're being treated or the way big business and law makers fail to protect us from the dangers of producing bigger, faster food.

I have so much respect for people like actor Larry Sullivan, who is dedicated to animal rights and living vegan, and also happens to be one of the nicest people in the world. Here are some quotes from his Facebook page:

"Saving one animal won't change the world...but it will surely change the world for that one animal."

"I don’t ask people to not eat animals to be a jerk or controlling...I ask because the animals can’t."

Would love to hear from anyone who's made this huge, important change. How much did the cost of eating go up and how difficult was it to integrate this into your life?

What's With the Hellergies?

I've had allergies about as long as I've had a nose, so I've certainly learned to cope with them over the years. But this year, even I have to say, UGH. This sucks!

Allergy veterans like myself know all to well when their symptoms are different from that of a cold, and I can say without hesitation, I am not flu ridden or down with a bad cold, but suffering from the worst allergies I've ever experienced (of course, not taking into account the time my face was literally covered, eyes swollen shut, due to an allergic reaction to poison ivy).

Seasonal allergies are never pleasant, but I remember once asking a student why she'd been absent for two months and she told me, "I had allergies." Huh. I remember thinking, if that were a reason to stay home, I'd be... dead?

But this year is oh so special. Today a congested, weary-looking student told me she was going home early because her allergies were terrible, to which I whole-heartedly gave her my blessing. I saw a friend yesterday, who has also been a long-time allergy sufferer, but first-timer in breaking out in hives. UGH! And me? Well I'm hitting my inhaler at an unprecedented rate due to my allergy-induced asthma, and simply feeling like crap. And so tired!

What the hell? Is this a scam? Did the Benadryl company have something to do with this? I need another nap.

Be a Doll

Most people are critical of themselves in some way. Actors are commonly their own biggest critics, in particular. And maybe that's because perception means so much when you're trying to get hired as a character in a story. But isn't it funny to sometimes find out how other people perceive you?

I teach adults, so I guess I listen to what they say about me more closely and take it more seriously than I would kids. On Tuesday, I saw two ladies in the front row whispering and smiling. I could tell they were talking about me, so I interrupted (kidding, of course). "Hey, what's going on over there?" They giggled, "We were saying you look like a doll."

Today a different student in the front row interrupted my class to say, "You look like Barbie. Do people tell you that?" All I could think was, "In your country, is Barbie a flat-chested, unmarried woman in her 30s, who teaches in Watts part-time and is considering bankruptcy?"

Of course, didn't say that. I just laughed and smiled... even said, "Uh..thank you" despite how stupid it felt.

And it's not that I can't take a compliment. I just can't take one seriously that I don't think applies to me at all.

Later this afternoon I remembered something. That student with the Barbie comment had a headache today... because she'd forgotten her glasses. Ah-hah! Not Barbie, just a blonde blur. OK, that I can accept that.

The Sidewalk Mafia

I know I've voiced my thoughts before on mothers and strollers, but seriously, is it safe for anyone to have a foot on a sidewalk in Santa Monica without fear of losing a toe or at least some skin, to a pair of Cadillac strollers and snobby mommies, power walking behind them?

And it's not the fact that they're taking up the whole sidewalk, it's the thoroughly unapologetic attitude towards inconveniencing others. In my experience, nine times out of ten, a bratty kid on a skateboard is far more likely to "sorry, please, and thank you" his way around me when he comes flying down the sidewalk, than a mother pushing a stroller.

Today as I was putting money in the meter, I got nailed in the back of my foot just above my heel by a Sidewalk Mafia member's oversized stroller. Even when I let out an "Ouch!" as snobby mommy wizzed by, I got not even a pause, much less an apology.

Honestly, if you want to be bitch, don't do it in front of your kids. It's much harder for me to call you names in public that way.

It's the Sidewalk Mafia. It's their territory, and don't you dare get in their strolling way. Or you just might get whacked. On the foot.

Really Lame Housewives

I hate to slam one of my favorite pastimes, but does anyone else think the Real Housewives of New Jersey has become a real snoozefest?

I mean, does anyone really care if some brain-dead mafia wife is making pasta sauce in her garage? And last night? Just one lame, salad-eating, contrived argument scene after another. And I can honestly say, even I don't see the point.

Highlight? Last night we saw a sleazy modeling agent tell psycho-Danielle, "You're a really good mom." (shouldn't even she have been suspicious?) This was prompted by the funneling of her 14-year-old daughter into the safe and nurturing modeling business. Hopefully her daughter won't also follow in her mother's pesky, cocaine and kidnapping with loaded weapons, footsteps (and yes, that was fabulous and shocking, as far as storylines go, but way overused now).

And this is just catty and mean, but what happened to Dina? Was the lighting in the baby store really that bad, or did she age like 15 years since last season?

OK, OK... need a new pastime.

Why So Trashy?

I've mentioned before that I'm big fan of the teachings of Abraham-Hicks. One quote I try to keep in mind is, "They're not really messing up your world in the way you think they are, they're creating in their own world. And I can fly with that when the guy in the BMW cuts me off in traffic, or when Elizabeth Hasselbeck says... anything, or when LuAnn de Lesseps or gets behind a microphone to "sing."

But one area where I just can't swallow that mentality is when I see someone litter. I'm not an environmentalist, per se, but for some reason that I can't talk myself out of, it just enrages me.

You smoke? Fine, it's legal. But you're already polluting our air, how dare you throw your cigarette butt out your car window? I've often daydreamed of throwing that cigarette right back into the driver's car. Where it belongs.

Not too long ago I saw an older couple at a stop light, open their car door to toss out a fast food drink cup. Just dropped it right on the street on Culver Blvd. What the hell is that?

I can't begin to think about the atrocities I witnessed when I worked at at Los Angeles Technology Center (and I'm not even talking about the evil, puppy-eating woman who runs the place). High school students walk two steps past a garbage can and toss their half eaten fries and chips on the sidewalk.

UGH! I just don't get it. The only time littering is OK is if you're throwing up or dying. And even then... well...

Thank You For Being a Facebook Friend

Though I've sworn off the show since former my Groundlings classmate, Michaela Watkins' untimely departure from SNL (and because it's just not very good and I waste enough time on Facebook), I couldn't help but record Betty White's appearance from last night.

Such a delight. Sure, there were lots of time-to-run-to-the-bathroom moments as usual, but Betty White was truly a timelessly, talented treat! She took a moment during her monologue to thank Facebook for campaigning to get her on the show as a host. What struck me, was when she said, "When I finally learned what Facebook was I thought, what a huge waste of time!" So true! Why am I still on there??

Maybe it's because email is so quickly becoming an old-fashioned way of communicating. Even my close friends (my age) respond far more quickly to a message sent through Facebook rather than through an email account.

And is it just me, or does everyone on Facebook feel like they get news faster on Facebook? And simply feel more in touch with what's happening, not just in the lives of my friends, but in the world?

Sure made it easier to wish my lady friends with offspring a Happy Mother's Day! Hope you all had a great one!

Really?

So I left out one surprise from yesterday. You may or may not have heard of a kindergarten teacher from a tiny Georgia town who is on trial for molesting three young girls. This might not be quite as shocking, if it were a man facing these 22 counts of sexual battery and molestation... against young girls.

Instead it's 37-year-old Tonya Craft who is a mother of a young girl herself. The community is torn in half. One half says it's a witch hunt the other whole-heartedly believes she's guilty.

Evidence? Not really. It's mostly her word against these little girls, who claim that Craft would molest the girls at her house during sleepovers for her daughter.

Since her arrest, she's lost her job, her house, and custody of her daughter.

So, is there a precedent for this? I have to say, knowing only what I've read, I just have a hard time believing these allegations are true.

It's tragic either way. And really weird.

Friday of Surprises!

Surprise #1: The wonderful, supportive, actress-obsessed blogger, Haren Yong, who is also the Web Features Editor for Youth Entertainment Portal Klik.TV, posted a lovely blog he wrote about me! Thanks Haren!

Surprise #2: The Ferrari left us today. I was so unprepared! It wasn't supposed to be picked up until the 17th. Phil suggested I park my car in the empty garage now, but I said, "Not yet. It's too soon." You will be missed 355!

Surprise #3: A lovely lunch with great friend and actress Jen Nikolaisen at Cheebo on Sunset was interrupted when I found a hair in my salad. Not a huge deal, until our misogynistic waiter who kept calling me "lady" insinuated that I put it there and he wasn't doing anything about it. Um, what?  Right before I asked to speak to the manager, he tore up the check and told us we didn't have to pay anything. Wow.

Surprise #4: I have won  £1,350,000.00. Pounds. I just have to send all my sensitive information to this really unique email address for more information. Great! Irish19@btinternet.com must be a huge fan.

Oh TV!

Shocking to me how in this day in the land of TV, when it's harder than ever to get a show picked up and on the air, that such bad TV shows come into my living room. I was so looking forward to the ABC spooky new episodic, " Happy Town," but yikes! Really? Cheesy, cliche music transitions us into yet another scene of contrived characters playing the town idiots, and each set up is another opportunity for the cast to assault us with campy, cringe-worthy dialogue.

And then there's "Fringe." One of my favorites for the past year and a half has taken a turn for the worse. Where ever in the FBI world of investigating unexplainable phenomena was the film noir door opened for Olivia Dunham to break into song? Yeah, you lost me there.

I loved "Heroes" and then there was just too much and too many powers to follow. Lost me.

And then there's shows I loved that went off the air. What happened to "Eli Stone"? Great, fun show... tossed. "Lipstick Jungle"? "Swingtown"? And now, probably "Damages"! Gone!

No wonder reality TV is so alive and thriving. Should decisions about what America wants to watch be this hard to get right at this point? Urgh.

Every year on this day, I think of one place and one place only. No, not Cabo San Lucas, Puerta Vallarta, or even good old TJ, but El Cholo Cafe in Santa Monica, CA. This home of delicious margaritas and seriously diet-unfriendly cuisine, was good enough to put me in a hideous senorita dress and employ me until I found something I was better at.

My career at El Cholo lasted five long years, in that long, hot dress. Still don't get it. Why the hell did we have to wear those long, polyester, very ugly, unsafe to carry trays up a flight of stairs in, dresses? I've been to Mexico, no one there looks that ridiculous. And the guys got to wear the easy, comfy, even stylish for a moment, Guayabera shirts. A little sexist?

Still, I made some really wonderful friends there that I still have today.

And Cinco de Mayo was the one day out of the year the women didn't have to wear that punishing costume. We wore jeans and t-shirts for whatever brand of tequila we were slinging in particular that day.

And I also have to thank whoever was managing El Cholo on the day when we took the photos shown in the slideshow at the end of this old-school Wrenches and Wenches sketch, Margaritaville.

Cool Desert!

On our way back from Tuscon, we decided to break up the trip, and stopped along the way in Indio, CA at Fantasy Springs Resort. Aside from the fact that it was of course, dry and hot (common in the desert I hear), this spot in the middle of nowhere was lovely.

Really cool, modern decor and a bed that easily rivals the Westin's Heavenly Bed. We stayed on a Monday night and the only thing cooler than the constant blowing AC everywhere you went (NOT a complaint, btw) was the room rate of about 73 clams per night. Not to mention our visit to the snazzy, loungy pool & jacuzzi was very private. We were the only ones there!

It also has a casino, which we had zero interest in entering or smelling like, which was great because the hotel has its own separate entrance.

Six restaurants in the hotel and we ate at trendy, yummy, upscale casual Pom, where we mistakenly ordered enough food for a week of dinners at the Gosselins, which cost us about 50 bucks. Drinks at the rooftop wine bar? Can you beat $5 a glass (with a coupon from the front desk) and a lush, beautiful view from the top?

Regrets? We were too full to stop in at Lique, the ice cream parlor which stays open until 5AM.

Complaints? Just one... WiFi was $9.95 per day. I don't get it. It's free at McDonalds for goodness sakes!

Mazel Tov!

Last night I attended my very first Jewish wedding. My dear friend Leyna Juliet Weber of Working Bug Productions tied the knot at the stunning Westin La Paloma in Tucson, AZ. From the breaking of the glass to the chair dance, they left nothing out. Such a treat!

But the Jewish traditions weren't the only things that really made this wedding stand out to me. Just like on youtube and The Office, the wedding party came dancing down the aisle to the Blacked Eyed Peas. Then a group of four friends sang, "I would walk 500 miles," followed by scene read by two actors from When Harry Met Sally. So much fun, so well done.

Can I have a Jewish wedding? Guess I'd have to find someone to buy a ticket for that boatride first. Oy Vey!

In Arizona

Happy May Day everyone! As an ESL teacher and citizen who fully supports immigration reform, it's a bit ironic that this May Day I am in, of all places, the most controversial state in the country right now. When we crossed the border from California to Arizona, we also ironically never noticed a "Welcome to Arizona" sign. We spent a night in Phoenix and now in Tucson, and I'm not sure what I expected to see on the streets, but I saw no unusual police activity or raids on businesses, hunting down possible illegal aliens.

I've been pleased and relieved to hear that such immediate and proactive steps are being taken to fight this legislation. Elected officials, law enforcement officers, and tourists alike are taking a stand against what might be the most unconstitutional law since the end of slavery, and what we can only hope will the be the darkest we will ever see in our lifetimes.

Regardless of your opinions on immigration, Arizona's decision is as dangerous to the individuals it sets out to prosecute as it is to every American protected by the Constitution. It sets a precedent that could make the land of the free as a relevant a statement to Nazi Germany.

When individuals in our country become the target of crime for fear of being prosecuted if they themselves report illegal activity, the system has put people in harm's way intentionally. That's just not American. Not to mention that the majority of these individuals enter the US seeking jobs Americans don't want and paying into a Social Security system they will never be able to collect on.

Hope everyone is safe and happy today, no matter where you are or where you're from.

In The Pool

I would like to take this opportunity to thank whoever invented carpool lanes. Yes, trying to get out of LA on a Friday at 5:00 is a poor idea, noted. But imagine how much worse it was for couples and families making that same ambitious decision before the HOV lane was over there, to the left (thank you Beyonce, also).

Left me wondering, how many of these vehicles in front of or behind us are actually carpooling? As in, sharing one vehicle to work or school. Aside from soccer moms trading off chauffeur duties, how many people in LA really use the HOV for its true intended purpose, to reward high occupancy vehicles, and get more cars off the road, thus relieving congestion? I saw what looked like lots of couples, possibly family members, but not anyone I'd guess were co-workers.

Here's to a great weekend with a friend or two to make you HOV ready!

We knew this day was coming, that they would one day leave us. But, oh SO sad! The two baby hummingbirds who were growing up outside our upstairs hallway window are in fact, gone. We have empty nest.

Sure, we're happy they're healthy enough to fly away on their own, but they grew up so fast! It was like having adorable baby pets we didn't have to take care of.

They were however, as of yesterday, really struggling to fit in that little nest together. I guess they needed their independence.

Oh, the memories!

They'd better visit, at least!

Three Things...

I love about today!

1. I found a really cute bathing suit at Target for $34! And I only had to try on one! Which, is good, because most of them were testing my gag reflex. I enjoy bathing suit shopping about as much as snacking on broken glass, so the triumph (at a bargain no less) is truly insurmountable. Yay!

2. Discovered the wonders of Netflix instant streaming via the Wii. Left me in full awe and gratitude of advancements in technology. And I got to see the pilot episodes of X-Files and Weeds. Double Yay!

3. Learned today that the very funny short film I was in, Gay Baby, won the Best Overall Short Film Award at FilmOut San Diego! Yay! Yayy!! Yayyy!!!

What I Learned...

We all know that unions and tenure make it almost impossible to fire public school teachers and community college professors. And, I thought I'd heard it all after I heard about the teacher who couldn't stay awake during class, so rather than being fired, was given a teacher's assistant.

Oh, but I really hadn't heard it all... and I still haven't. Today a student complained about another teacher to me. Long story short, the guy tells funny stories in class, but doesn't teach much of anything. Also farms out to the class to see where he can get discounts from students. He opens with, "I have a student in Long Beach who works for an airline, so she gets me a discount." Sounds harmless? I wish it was...

It turns out this gem has quite the history. The offenses are endless, from failing students who complained about him, to threatening to fail anyone who didn't sign up for his summer class, but my favorite is how he taught a Saturday class and convinced the small number of students that he wasn't being paid to teach, but he was there to tutor them, for a fee. He was busted by a custodian when a student confided in him, "The teacher is expensive, but I guess it's worth it."

Second favorite story, another teacher, same school was teaching two night classes at two different schools simultaneously. He would go to one location, set it up, leave, drive to the other, back and forth. Called in sick a lot.

Sad? Amusing? More than anything, you CANNOT make this stuff up!

Down to 2?!

When I got the callback for the lead in the hilarious web series, Nanny Interviews, the director said in the email, it's down to you and one other actress. I thought, Ugh! Why did you have to tell me that?! Pressure is on! And of course I ran into the awkward situation of seeing the beautiful other actress when I arrived a bit early. Turned out to be the lovely and talented Jill Saunders, who I didn't remember at the time, but had actually known through mutual contacts years ago.

Today at my favorite (ahem) place to audition, CAZT, I had a callback, where I noticed only one other actress had been called back for the role I was auditioning for. Here we are again!

Not exactly... the casting director came out to talk to some of the actors about the wait and to answer questions, and turns out the other actress was here for her first call!

What do I do with this information? I'm interpreting, "We like you Beth, but we're not fully ready to commit." OK, me no likey that line of thinking.

I think I'll just ignore it and take my "I got this" energy in the room!

Not a camper, that's no secret. Do I love the outdoors? From time to time, for a controlled period of time, sure. As long as there's bug spray, sunscreen, plumbing and ample opportunity to go inside when I've had enough.

But who could resist falling completely in love with what's just two feet away from my upstairs hallway window?

These two baby hummingbirds were discovered by my boyfriend Phil at the beginning of last week and quickly became our central point of attention. For days, our regular check-ups on the babies were the same. The two of them snuggled in their nest, no momma in sight. Beginning to fear they'd been abandoned and would surely starve, we were in awe and relief to later catch glimpses of the mother feeding her hungry babies.

Truly amazing and ridiculously adorable.

Alas, those two are growing fast and won't be there forever. Who knew we were going to be experiencing empty nest syndrome so soon!

Dream On?

I remember my dreams just about every night. There are lots of theories on what dreams mean, but a common theory about why we dream, is that dreams are the subconscious mind at work, pointing out to us something our conscious minds are not paying attention to.

Let's say for the moment, that's true. Then why did I dream last night that Angelina Jolie had died due to complications in her latest pregnancy, and that I ran into Katie Couric having lunch with Barbara Walters at a Beverly Hills High School restaurant, where she was a complete bitch to me, because I called her Katie.

What exactly or inexactly was my subconscious trying to tell me? Famous women often end up bitchy or dead? So, careful what I wish for? I have to believe my subconscious mind isn't that stupid. But I often wake up feeling simply troubled and sometimes shaken by these jumbled, complicated storylines that I can't begin to interpret and are not... restful at all.

Though my boyfriend Phil occasionally calls out something in his sleep like, "Only when I'm golfing!" (though he doesn't golf) or an annoyed, "Oh, great!" He never remembers his dreams, which is something I've grown to envy.

Why can't my mind just shut off and let me rest when I sleep? I don't want to work out anything in brain while I'm snoring the night away. Can't I just deal with it all when I wake up?

I Should Be Doing This, I Should...

How many times a week do I find myself saying these things, out loud? There are oh so many things that I should be doing that I'm just not. First and foremost, taking advantage of everything our wonderful union, SAG has to offer. I pay my dues, why not use more of the resources they cover?

And I'm sure AFTRA offers lots too, but I seem to hear much less about those opportunities, or perhaps there are simply much less for actors. SAG however, has weekly events that I absolutely should be participating in. For example, SAG's LifeRaft Live Stream events. Next one is this Tuesday ,http://www.sagfoundation.org/liferaft/livestream. What can I tell you about these events? Nothing! I've never tuned into one.

And then there's iActor. It's not new, and yet still I have never taken advantage of it. The Casting Access Project? SAG members can take FREE workshops with casting directors. Got the registration packet, but never filled it out. So, never been to the free ones -- but I've PAID to go to other places! And I'm SO frugal. What is up with that?

Enough already! I'm all over SAG! Starting... tomorrow...

Grind No More?

Ever since college I've been grinding my teeth in my sleep. Obviously it's a bad thing. I've had many root canals and crowns... not fun or cheap. Plenty of jaw pain, TMJ, and just soreness. But over time, I've come to accept it as just a personality quirk. Part of who I am in my stressful, busy little life.

So, I finally found a mouthguard that I'll actually keep in my mouth throughout the night. In the past I've found those hard, plastic ones under my bed, thrown across the room, or simply MIA. It's by Sleep Right and it's soft and flexible and comfortable. And yes, it helps. But according to my dentist, it's not enough.

Apparently from all my grinding and clenching, I actually have bone growing under my tongue on the bottom of my mouth.

So if I keep it up, I will end up with a tongue hanging out of mouth in 30 years or so. Beautiful.

The real issue is I need to calm the hell down and stop grinding and clenching my damn teeth. But how? Hypnotism? Muscle relaxants? Meditation?

How Did That Pilot Land?

Last Friday I learned that a friend of mine and his writing partner sold their pilot to a studio. Yippee!! Once it's ordered, they will be producers and writers on the series, which I'm certain will be a hit! The big question, HOW did you do it? Did your agent pitch it? Nope, no agent. Did you have an inside contact already established? Not at all. Had you sold one before? Pitched one before? No, first time. Did you film a presentation pilot to pitch it? Oh, no. WHAT? Well, then how, dammit? They joined a book club. After the meeting, they chatted with a group member who happened to be awfully connected (to say the least), they mentioned they were writers, and group member suggested they send over some of their work. And rolling the ball went.

This got me thinking (and yes, it hurt). What about all those pilot presentations folks film independently? Do they work? After giving it a long thought (really hurt) I couldn't think of a single independently produced pilot presentation I knew of, that had ever become a series. I came up with one that was bought by a studio, but was never ordered as a series.

So wait, then why do people make presentation pilots? Who gave them the idea? What gave them the idea that it's a good idea, with so little evidence that it works? Is presentation pilot-making some kind of epidemic, full of false hope, infecting creative, ambitious writers and producers?

And the verbal pitch-only approach sort of makes sense. We always think the book was better than the movie... and it usually was. But why do we think that? Maybe it's because we have an idea in our minds that is personal to us about who the characters are, what their surroundings look like, etc. When what we have in our minds clashes with what we see on screen, there's a disconnect. It's all wrong! That's not at all the people and story I had in my brain! I don't like it!!!

Well, when you pitch a project and other people get to just listen to your ideas, and picture it in their own minds, it becomes their own. Perhaps it's much easier to say yes to something, and to like it more and more when you get to picture it for yourself, rather than try to like someone else's vision served up in a mini episode.

Got a great TV show idea? Maybe you don't need to get an agent, schmooze your pants off, or spend your time and money shooting a presentation pilot. Maybe just join a book club.

Meanbook

What is it about Facebook that makes people engage in, well... fights? Sure lots of the "updates," "comments" and "likes" are funny, fun, supportive, even loving and inspiring at times. But then there's the rest of the time, when they're bitter, snarky, rude, defensive, antagonistic, and just plain mean. The blood gets boiling, and it seems what motivates people to express their opinions on the pages of "friends" on Facebook, is the mean, angry stuff. People often seem more ready to attack an idea or thought that does not set well with them than to simply, say something nice.

Sure, political opinions spark debate, issues like Prop 8 bring out the best and worst in people, but lately I've noticed really unnecessary arguments and randomly mean comments sprouting up. A film critic making fat jokes about Gabourey Sidibe, a talent manager posting a nasty quote by an actress, I could go on and on! YUCK!

I've had at least two friends quit Facebook because they couldn't handle the constant debates they found themselves in. It's exhausting.

And it's hard for loud-mouthed, outspoken me, to keep my comments to myself. but I have to! Now, when I see something I don't like, I just ignore it, or better yet "hide" the "friend" that posted it. Nothing negative deserves my energy!

Dammit Damages! Don't Go!

It's no secret I love TV, but it's not often that I urge people to watch a show. Damages" on FX starring Glenn Close, made me do just that. SUCH a great storyline, incredible acting, a reason to look forward to Monday. But now it could be gone... forever!

Tonight was the third season finale, but word on the evil entertainment street is that tonight may very well have been the series finale. Ratings have dropped for reasons I couldn't begin to try to explain. I want nothing more than to see what tough, New York attorney, Patty Hewes has in store for us next. But will we ever know?? If Sony has their way - yes! They are making every effort to find a buyer such as DirecTV to help pay for the expensive production costs, but with the ratings what they are it's a tough sell.

So... we have a slim chance at winning this case.

How soon can we file an appeal?

Reel Proof

This past Friday night was the world premiere of Gay Baby from Wonder Entertainment. I was so thrilled to have been cast in this short, alongside such amazing and certainly seasoned actors, such as Larry Sullivan ( CSI, 24, the Secret Life of the American Teenager) and Richard Riehle (Grounded for Life, Office Space, too damn much to write!). A wonderful experience, yes. But one I almost didn't get.

It wasn't until Friday night at the FilmOut After Party that I learned, there had been callbacks for my role... which I was not invited to. WHAT?? Huh?? You didn't fall in love with me instantly at the first audition? The short answer is, no. Writer/director Kevin Kelly told me, "We liked you... but we just weren't sure." Well, after calling back a slew of actresses for the role of Maggie, (some who were in real life actually quite pregnant) they still weren't sure. Kelly said, "We liked a lot of them, but we just wanted someone... funnier." Casting director Damian Pelliccione suggested, "Take another look at Beth Shea." Pelliccione had cast me only months before in his project, The Biggestwannabe.com, so luckily he was a fan.

Kelly searched me on youtube, saw my reel and said, "That's it. That's who we want."

So, the story here is, my reel, not my audition, absolutely got me the part. A clip of me slapping my new husband across the face at our wedding reception, sealed the deal.

Reel good to know!

Gay Baby Meets the World!

Tonight is a very exciting night for everyone involved in making the very funny and wonderfully-executed short film, Gay Baby. Tonight it will world premiere at FilmOut Film Festival in San Diego!

Produced by Wonder Entertainment and directed by Kevin Kelly, Gay Baby is the story of two expectant parents who get some most unexpected news at the doctor's about their unborn, fabulous son. Starring Larry Sullivan, Tye Olson, myself, and Richard Riehle, Gay Baby explores how one father comes to terms with the news, with a little help along the way!
And... the festival programmer was kind enough to pay for my hotel accommodations tonight. Delightful!

Gay Baby was also recently accepted into NewFest 2010 in New York City, Frameline 34 in San Francisco, and the 12th Annual Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. Woo-hoo!

Ah, Tax Day!

Or maybe you just have Larry King's eighth divorce on your mind. Which is understandable. Truly mind-boggling. Which is stranger, that he decided he found "the one" eight times, or that eight different women agreed to, at least the public perception, of intimacy with that little creature?

Well, I filed long ago, only because I really wanted my refund which I'm still patiently waiting for. Much like I'm still patiently waiting for the world to become disinterested in Kate Gosselin.

Although, Phil and I did make a pretty good Jon and Kate last Halloween. But still, yucks on them both! And taxes!

Watts the Deal?

I teach ESL (English as a Second Language) at a community college, but I have a couple of classes, off-campus in community-based centers. This always has its own set of issues or obstacles. You're a mobile teacher going into areas where there's need and that's usually not the nicest of neighborhoods. I teach at two offsite facilities, both in Watts (an area sadly famous for all the wrong reasons). And the two facilities, though just blocks apart, couldn't be more different.

One is called Kedren Head Start. Kedren has several other locations and facilities around Los Angeles, providing an array of services to the community from mental health services to nutrition and early childhood education. The staff at Kedren Head Start couldn't be friendlier, more helpful, or more grateful to have us there. They fall down over themselves trying to accommodate and anticipate any and all needs to improve and enhance the education experience for the students and teachers.

Part of my class is distance learning, which means the students take home DVDs and books to study in their free time and/or with friends or family members. We watch part of the video in class every week, and the staff at Kedren always has a laptop with speakers, a projector, and projector screen set up and ready to go for me. One morning the projector screen was already in use, so I walked in the classroom to find the project coordinator and two other staff members working quickly, adhering large pieces of white paper to the board so I could use that in its place. These are people and an institution that really care about their community members and honor the importance of education.

My other offsite location in Watts is at the Coalition of Mental Health Professionals. They also provide community services in the areas of conflict resolution, domestic violence, and other counseling services. And while I can't speak on behalf of them, their actions towards me as a teacher, certainly have not been conducive with a stress on providing a positive and effective learning environment for the students I teach.

They requested to have ESL classes taught there at the beginning of the year, but I would have to guess that their intentions were not solely focused on serving the immigrant population of the community. Their overall attitude towards me as a teacher is far less than grateful. They act as if they're doing me some kind of favor, rather than the other way around. Here is an email I sent to my supervisor after class today:

When I arrived at CMHP this morning, the room had been split in half with dividers. When I asked the staff member if we could move them, she got angry and told me to stop complaining.

The space is pretty cramped now and the other side of the room was not being used during my class time. I tried to get creative providing workspace, but we were maxed out on space at 19 students. Some students were using file cabinets against the wall as desks because there isn't enough room to allow another table to our side. Some of the students at the back of the room couldn't see the board. I tried moving it closer, but the room is now too narrow to put it anywhere else and the board itself is not big.

Unfortunately, that program literally now has nowhere to grow.

This is sad, unnecessary, unacceptable, and difficult to understand. The worst part is, my employer is using their limited resources in a place where we seem to be unwanted, when there are a variety of other offsite locations that would and will welcome and embrace our services.

The tragedy here is the students. There is a need in that community that isn't being honored.

Walk in Those? Heel No!

Today I wore a skirt and heels to an audition. And the role certainly didn't require it. I was playing a waitress, so I barely looked at the script. Why? Before I hung up my apron for good, I had more than 13 years experience slinging food and drink for tips. I got this.

But what's up with the get-up? It was a snooty, upscale waiter, but still... a skirt? And heels? I looked at those heels and my sore feet rather disapprovingly when I got home. Three inches? Get off my feet! That seemed excessive. But... haven't I heard about taller shoes lately? Much taller? Like, five and six-inch heels? That's insane! Right?

So what's up with the tall shoes these days? Well according to experts, shoe height is at an all-time high. And who is to blame? Apparently Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns. Yep! Thought is, that the recession is driving escapism. Thus, women are towering! Lady Gaga escaped more than anyone, when she strutted her stuff in 12-inch heels for her "Bad Romance" video.

Yikes! Sure, heels make women feel taller, thinner, more stylish and sophisticated, but at the cost of pain, stress fractures and safety hazards galore?

I applaud being fashion-forward, but three inches is my limit. I'm putting my foot down. In a flip-flop.

Actor in Waiting

If you're an actor in LA, you've probably been late to an audition before. And 9 times out of 10, that's no big deal, because when you get there, traffic-weary, possibly a little sweaty and frustrated, they're running 20 minutes to an hour behind schedule, so you're playing that hurry up and wait game. Which is frustrating, but it's better than showing up 5 minutes late, expecting the norm, when the casting assistant tells you, as you sign in, "We just called your agent." Ugh!

And then there's the other end of the spectrum... getting there early. Sometimes that's unavoidable if you're coming from a long distance. Not stressful, but presents its own issues What do you do? Head inside to see if they'll see you early? What if they haven't started your role yet and they get annoyed? Wait in your car and meditate? Going inside to wait seems logical, until you remember that weird "actors in the waiting room" dynamic. Car seems much more comfortable. Go for a walk? Call a friend? Find a quiet spot and beat the lines to death? Again?

Well, today I decided to head on in early and just see what happens. Turning the corner I see a guy outside the casting office throwing air punches and karate kicks. What? Really? Is Keifer Sutherland auditioning for this? I headed back to my car. Too weird even for me. A few minutes later I decided 30 minutes early was not crazy early, so I headed in. Karate guy was on the floor doing twisting yoga poses. Gave me the polite head nod "hello" as I walked by him to sign in.

Oh actors! Who knows? Maybe I'm the biggest weirdo who doesn't have some pre-audition ritual.

Lucky

Some people in your life are just indispensable. No, I don't mean, you couldn't bear to defriend them on Facebook. I mean they serve an important purpose in your life, that you might even from time to time, take for granted. But truly, you can't imagine life without them.

Your best friend who listens to you, counsels you, tells you the truth, even when you don't want to hear it, but need to. The mom or mother figure in your life, who always remembers your birthday and always wants to take care of you and always forgives you. The neighbor or friend who always takes in your mail or takes care of your pet when you're out of town. Your friends you can always count on for support, advice, a laugh, and good memory-making material. And if you're really lucky, the special someone very close to you, who understands you, puts up with you, and loves you just the way you are. If you have all of these, you are incredibly lucky. And you certainly don't need Facebook.

And why am I so sappy and nostalgic on a Sunday night? I have all of those people and Bailey. Just realizing how incredibly lucky I am.

Couchless Fun

If you have a Wii and you like to workout... or if you have a Wii and hate to workout, might I suggest... EA Sports Active! I got this as an anniversary gift from my boyfriend last year and I LOVE IT!!

Fair enough, I don't have the Wii Fit, nor have I ever used one, so I can't compare the two, but I love working out with EA Sports Active. It has features that let you set goals, track progress, etc., but I honestly don't use them. I just love how it's actually, quite fun.

Most people have a fairly regular workout regimen. What I do to keep it from becoming mundane and dreadful, is switch it up often. In a week, I usually do Tracy Anderson two days, run one day, pilates or yoga two days and EA Sports Active at least one day.

You can custom make the workout that you want. Mine always involve basketball, tennis, and boxing. There's also running, jumping and toning with a resistance band. Is it perfect? Well, no. One annoying thing is having to stick the nunchuck in your leg band for some of the exercises. Sometimes it pops out, or you don't have enough time between exercises to properly secure it. That's a bummer, but still an overall fun way to get some exercise.

Mmm, getting off the couch now might be a good idea right about now. Happy Saturday!

A lot. And while I can tell pretty clearly when he wants something, when he's angry, stressed out, wants to play, or go outside, I certainly don't think I could translate for him. Wouldn't you know, a company in Japan says they can! And they've been selling their dog translation device since 2002! What?? Did I hear about this and assume it was a joke? Probably.

The Japan Ringing Tone Laboratory in Tokyo developed "Bowlingual" to translate dog barks into human language. It comes with a handset and a microphone you attach to your dog's collar and claims to be able to analyse emotions ranging from joy to frustration to sadness, and says things like, "Play with me!"

Cool! Or crap? Pretty sure I already know when my dog is feeling those ways or wants to play. And $79.99? I wouldn't go so far as to call it a gadget, but maybe a fun, over-priced toy for kids.

But translating your dog's barks isn't all that The Japan Ringing Tone Laboratory claims to be capable of. Looking for love? They've got a ringtone you can download to attract members of the opposite sex. And just in time for allergy season, they've released a ringtone that claims to cure hayfever. Yep, apparently the ringtone releases waves that shake out pollen stuck in the user's nose.

Got a problem? The Japan Ringing Tone Laboratory claims to have an answer. Other therapeutic ringtones help you lose weight, digest food, quit smoking and relieve shoulder pain.

Should we buy into this?? It's Japanese for goodness sakes! They gave us sushi, Kawasaki, Toyota! Oh yeah... poor Toyota.

Anything they could do to make my phone ring? Preferably with booking news? That would be nice!

How nice is it when people are nice?

Sounds so simple, but if you've ever been an actor at an audition and felt unwelcomed, dismissed, or even... a little, (ahem) abused at a casting office, you know just how crappy that feels. You take the time to prepare, drive for what could be two hours in traffic (yes, one way!), normally struggle to find parking, and then usually spend some time waiting among other actors to be called in. Who wants to do all that to be given little or no direction and one take? Upsetting? Yes! Necessary? No!

At an audition yesterday I was taken by the patience, positive energy, and just plain kindness of the session directors. They took the time to make sure I understood everything and got a great take. I left thinking, wow! It should ALWAYS be like that! That's an office that can say, "We love actors!" and actually mean it! And what do you know... I had a callback today. And the clients? So nice!! The first thing the director said to me was, "We loved your audition tape. So great." What? A director who wants to give his actors a confidence boost before performing? Sure, he probably said that to everyone... and that's GREAT! Such a positive experience.

Mascary No More!

Funny how something so small can make such a huge difference in your life.

I share a strong "waste nothing" mentality with my boyfriend Phil. When we are forced to throw away tomatoes or leftovers that've gone bad, there's always a moment of sad, shameful mourning at the sight of our loss being tossed in the garbage can. Then there's a sigh from one or both of us, followed by a "we must do better than this-esque" proclamation. It's that way of thinking that's kept me wearing the same awful mascara that I hate as mentioned in my post, "Mascary." I was forcing myself to face my bad purchasing decision, that way I'd never let it happen again!

And then Friday came, and I walked into Sephora and bought... DiorShow. And the angels of make-up heaven sang! In tune! It has made all the difference in my morning routine! I love putting on mascara again. And it actually comes off when I want to take it off! Finally the finishing touch that it should be is back again. Drawback, I spent $28.00 on mascara. Ouch! That's insane! Could I possibly do this on a regular basis?

Can I Have the Number for Facebook Rehab, Please?

If Tiger and Jesse have to go to rehab for sex, then clearly I need to go for Facebook. I'm not sure when it went from fun to obsessive, but like any other addiction, when it gets out of control, your world becomes dark and sad, and all you really want is a fix. For me I hit rock bottom when I decided I should have a fan page. What I found disturbing and admittedly upsetting, was that people who are my Facebook "friends," even some who requested me and not the other way around, ignored my request to be a "fan."

Why oh why do people take it so seriously? Why do I?! Fair enough, I don't really need a fan page. And I really did just do it for fun. But oh boy... not fun. Here's what happened: I "suggested" to all my "friends" that they become a "Fan of Beth Shea" on my fan page. The next day I logged in and again clicked on "suggest" to see if I'd missed anyone. And I thought I had... because several people came up not "fuzzy" meaning they were neither already fans nor pending a response to the invitation. That was weird. Well, better send them another suggestion... I mean why would anyone bother being my friend if they didn't want to be my fan, right (do you hear the sound of my obsession?)? And why would anyone take something so silly, so seriously? Are there limits on how many things or people you can be fans of that I didn't know about? Or do my "friends" really not all like me enough to be my fans? IS THAT IT???

Well, let me give you a rundown of "friends" who ignored my request: someone I had just had dinner with a week before, someone I gave a role to in one of my movies, someone who asked me two days before to co-host a project with them, someone who wrote the day before on my page "I miss you so much!," someone I'd gotten a feature film audition for when I was working as a casting assistant, someone I BLOGGED about, the list goes on!!!

So what did I do with these friends? The only thing that seemed natural and appropriate. I de-friended them.

And apparently casting directors really don't like to be fans of actors, or at least not fans of me. All of them ignored my suggestion, with one even sending me a message "NO FAN PAGE REQUESTS." Um, OK. Probably inundated with actors trying to self-promote, something always expected of us yet consistently condemned.

And maybe I'm blowing this out of proportion. Maybe I don't need professional help, or even to deactivate my FB pages. Regardless, today is my Facebook Free Day. Not logging in. Until midnight. Yeah, I might need some help.

Easter Audition

First of all, really? Got the audition through my own submission on LA Casting, where I don't have video to submit, so a little weird to me even to be called in for a film. No script in advance, red flag #1. Huge crowd of 20 somethings waiting outside, red flag #2. Multiple duos of 20 somethings acting out the same scene, so weird to witness and pretty sad in many cases. Not a red flag just painful. Sides are not in script format and are not exciting, red flag #3. So why am I still here? Well, I left my cozy home on Easter Sunday and drove to Van Nuys (insert puke a little bit in my mouth here... we all know how I fell about the good parts of the valley!) because the breakdown boasted the project is going to Cannes. I figured if I have to go to Van Nuys to get to Cannes, I suppose I will.

The verdict? Well if I had to guess, I'd say no one there is going to Cannes anytime soon. Not an overall terrible experience, though. They didn't have a reader, so they brought us in two at a time. Kinda felt like a free acting class where the teacher liked us. That's always nice.

And what else was I going to do today anyway? Sit around and eat Easter candy? Making up for that now!

Grant Me One Grant, Please?

On this Good Friday, I have a question for the universe? How do a couple of funny ladies go about getting a grant to make a funny feature film?

Leigh Hall and myself, started Hall of Shea Productions when we decided to take our goods from stage to screen. We started with the short film Not in My Family, followed by Love Royale (won "Best of Faux" at the Faux Film Festival 2009, then the 2-part series, Represent, and most recently The Bold and The Fuel Efficient, still in post-production.

We've managed to fund these one to two-day productions with favors, friends, and sad-looking savings accounts, but I'm afraid that won't cut it for our first ever feature film endeavor.

We've got a great script, great cast in mind, all the energy and excitement we thing we'll need... just need some money and guidance.

Look at My Paws!

I'm forever curious about the quality and effectiveness of "As Seen On TV" products. Sounds great, but does it work? On his website, http://phil.iwouldusethis.com/, Phil Han reviewed the ShamWow, a great product I use and love! But what about the rest of them?

So I have a large, handsome Golden Retriever, Bailey. I've always lived in apartments which meant LOTS of walks with Bailey! All those walks on the sidewalk did a good job of filing down his claws, so I never had to worry much about clipping his nails. A few months ago we moved into a house with a yard (yay!), so we still walk, but not as much. Result? Bailey needs a pedicure. So, I decided to give the "As Seen On TV" product, PediPaws a try. I bought mine at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. It was $9.99, but I had a 20% coupon, so a pretty cheap experiment. The directions strongly encourage first-time users to watch the instructional video before trying it, which I did.

How'd it go? Just watch!

Overall, worth it in my opinion! And worth the cookie incentives on Bailey's end!

Standing Corrected

OK, so I didn't do my homework. In my blog post, "The Issue of the Core," I discussed the subject of claiming financial core status with SAG, but I didn't research the origins of it. By virtue of its title, I had always assumed it was intended for actors to have the opportunity to find work outside of their union if they found themselves in financial dire straits. Mike Kraft pointed out, that's just wrong. It was actually intended to give a SAG member the option to resign from their union in order to avoid paying for the political activities of the union. Essentially the member could pay only the "financial core" amount of dues, which were not to be used for political purposes.

I looked into it. In a 1963 Supreme Court ruling called NLRB v. GENERAL MOTORS. This ruling says,

“The burdens of membership upon which employment may be conditioned are expressly limited to the payment of initiation fees and monthly dues. It is permissible to condition employment upon membership, but membership, insofar as it has significance to employment rights, may in turn be conditioned only upon payment of fees and dues. “Membership” as a condition of employment is whittled down to its financial core.”

So, it was born out of a desire to have dues money used only for the purposes of collective bargaining activities, and not lobbying for legislation, etc.... and not so union actors could act in non-union projects. The fact that they can do that, is in fact, a legal loop hole.

Ironically enough, while I wouldn't want to claim financial core status to do non-union work, I would appreciate having control over how my dues are used. Learning this information made me more interested in financial core than before.

The bottom line is, whatever a SAG member's intentions are for choosing fi-core status, it is in fact the legal right of every guild member to do so. Knowing that, how ethical is it that when you go to SAG's website to learn about what it is, you are served this jargon:

"Fi-Core/FPNM are viewed as scabs or anti-union by SAG members, directors, and writers..." "IT MAY BE YOUR RIGHT, BUT IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU? YOUR CAREER? YOUR FAMILY?"

Wouldn't it be a more intelligent, and certainly more ethical approach to try to educate performers on what it is, what it means, and what it does, rather than try to scare or threaten them (and their family) out of something that is their legal right?

I'm just sayin'...

I Don't Want My MTV

Today I have a plea. Not a rant, not a bitch-fest, a plea. HEAR ME MTV. PLEASE STOP MAKING TELEVISION SHOWS! After careful consideration, your programming line-up has been deemed vacuous, incendiary and void of any and all substance. When I was a child, I watched Madonna, Motley Crue and The Bangles on MTV, in MUSIC VIDEOS. That’s what the “M” used to stand for. Now it stands for Malevolent. MTV used to be the most relevant source of music and music news to its young audience. Kids would rush home from school to catch World Premiere Videos, MTV Unplugged, and Total Request Live (TRL). Personally, on Saturday nights I stayed up late for the Headbangers Ball. Today, our youth (and some not so youthful) are assaulted with programs such as “Tila Tequila, a Shot at Love.” This abysmal dreg of society looking for bi-sexual staged relationships, recently took full publicity stunt advantage of her “fiancée’s” death. The late Casey Johnson (Johnson & Johnson heiress), was found dead at age 30 earlier this month and had apparently been dead for several days before her cleaning lady found her. Clearly what would happen to someone in a loving relationship. Tila “grieved” on Twitter, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgfN6l4xlVU saying “My wifey’s not dead, she’s just in a coma!!! Omg!!!” And then there’s Heidi Montag of “The Hills”, who recently plotted with her creepy husband Spencer to buy herself some press by apparently getting ten plastic surgeries in a day. Something you really want insecure, adolescent girls who watch MTV to idolize. I feel dirty just writing about these people. This all brings me to the man of the hour. Markice “Kesan” Moore reality star of MTV’s “From G’s to Gents” is currently wanted by Georgia police for beating his one-year-old daughter. Fear Sells! Just Ask My Sorority!

Today's (or tonight's) post starts with a confession. I watch "90210" :) No, my Tivo is not set to it, but I started watching it when I discovered an actress (unknown at the time) I did a film with last year, had joined the main cast. So, I'll blame it on Gillian Zinser that when I'm working out and need a brainless, visual distraction, I'll watch an episode online.

Watching episodes of anything online, means you're going to watch a commercial at every break. Often it's the same damn commercial or at least the same advertiser. And catering to 90210's young, female audience, the wizards at pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, took this brilliant opportunity to sling their vaccine Cervarix, with a fear-based advertising campaign. Scenarios were about the same, a young, pretty girl answers the phone, "Where's Julie?"... "Oh, she's in bad shape, she's not coming out tonight."... "What a wimp!" ... "She found out she has cervical cancer. She's only 25. They don't think she can have kids." Followed by sad silence.

OK, don't get me wrong, I'm all for getting vaccinations that you and your doctor think are right for you. But this vaccine protects women against HPV (Human Papillomavirus). It's funny, too... a similar vaccine Gardisil from Merck, approved in 2006, used commercials with happy mothers and daughters, who preached getting vaccinated for protection from HPV. Why does GSK need to go so far to compete as to use the ultimate buzz word, cancer?

HPV in some cases leads to cervical cancer. I had HPV. In fact, all of my girlfriends have had HPV. Weird? No! Over 80 percent of women get HPV. Bottom line, there's a long road between having HPV and that actually going untreated long enough, to actually go through all the four stages of precancerous HPV, to actually leading to cervical cancer. It can take YEARS. And, if detected with a pap smear, it's 100% treatable. In most cases, the HPV just goes away by itself.

Most people with HPV do not develop symptoms or health problems from it. In 90% of cases, the body’s immune system clears HPV naturally within two years.

Each year, about 12,000 women get cervical cancer in the U.S.

According to www.cancer.org, Cervical Cancer tends to occur in midlife, so it's pretty doubtful too many of those 12,000 women, were off to their 24th birthday party when they got the news.

If GlaxoSmithKline were running a PSA on abstinence, I'd say, awesome! Good for you! Looking out for today's youth! But GSK is a profit-driven entity, looking out for themselves, using fear tactics to make money. Cervarix costs $385 for a three-dose series.

This is a medical decision, not one that should be inspired by an ad agency's clever terror techniques.

Mascary...

Call it putting negative energy out to the universe if you must, but I HATE L'oreal Extra Volume Collagen Mascara! I couldn't find my usual Max Factor pick at my last desperate trip to CVS for mascara, so after standing there for several minutes staring at the wall of drugstore make-up, I finally went ahead and chose the one that I thought had a great description, and the packaging looked the most like my beloved Max Factor. Huge mistake. Clumpy doesn't begin to describe it. I always put on my mascara last - the finishing touch. Not such a nice finishing touch when you end up with clumps of mascara on your eye lids and under your eyes... after you've already finished applying make-up to those areas! UGH! No fun to re-do ever, but especially when you're trying to run out the door to work or an audition! Bottom line, take a look here and don't buy it!

I've been curious about what women think is the best drugstore mascara on the market? Everyone has different mascara needs... I am a whitey-white chick. Even my eyelashes are naturally blonde, so I really need all the help I can get in that department.

My main thought on this topic is, mascara has been around for a REALLY long time. How can a major company still possibly be screwing it up so badly? Well, according to Lira, they're not screwing it up across the board.

The Issue of The Core

Over the years I've heard lots of arguments for and against going "financial core." For anyone unfamiliar with the term, declaring financial core status as an actor means that a current SAG actor can work both SAG jobs and non-union jobs. SAG calls it being a fee paying non-member. The drawbacks? You have to turn in your SAG card, you can't vote in SAG elections and lots of people argue that it weakens the Screen Actors Guild. If SAG actors are wiling to work for non-union rates, why should producers and/or advertisers spend all the extra money to be a SAG project?

On one forum an actor argued that the only reason anyone should ever go financial core is if they're a celebrity doing a project for charity that's non-union. That's just senseless. Pretty sure the term "financial core" wasn't coined with the intention of taking care of celebrities, but actually out-of-work actors who are having trouble finding employment and making a living in union jobs.

Couldn't one see it as simply a smart business decision? We spend so much money as actors to train for, market, and pursue our careers, wouldn't going fi-core mean more opportunities to get returns on your investment? And to actually spend more time and get more experience, acting?

Many would argue the "experience" factor should have been played out before you ever joined SAG. Again a weak argument in my opinion. If you've ever been a non-union actor in Los Angeles, it's hard to get an agent to look at you twice unless you're under 18. You can't get into the union without working union jobs and you can't get union jobs unless you'r in the union. You can't get an agent without credits and it's hard to get credits without an agent. Not a simple equation. Personally, I paid a calling service with connections to slide me into three days of SAG background work before I paid the nearly $1200 (at that time) to get my SAG card.

I'm not fi-core, nor am I considering it. But I certainly don't have a die-hard opinion against it. If you ask me what really weakens the union, the first thought that comes to mind is the Commercial Strike of 2000. What a disaster. Advertisers found during this time that there were plenty of non-union actors willing to work for lots less money, and plenty of them had the chops for the job, without question. Result? Once the strike was over, many of those advertisers never or seldom went back to using union actors. And the commercial residuals SAG fought so hard for? SAG commercials used to pay a big, fat flat rate for a commercial spot, not pay per play. Would have been nice for all those folks in that last decade that booked spots that never ran or ran once.

I asked an agent once what he thought about financial core and he said, "In my experience, for actors who go "fi-core," casting directors start to see them as a non-union actors and tend to put them out of the category for union jobs. And we don't want that." True. We don't want that.

The Sound of My Voice?

One part of the business that still remains a relative mystery to me is voiceover work. The idea sounds fantastic! No worries about hair, make-up, wardrobe or whether or not I'm having a fat day. It seems to be the one area of show business where talent is in fact, the winning factor in who gets the job. Unless of course, that voice comes from a name who is up for the same role. That name is, as a rule, the universal winning factor. Oh, to have a name!

So how do you get into voiceover work? The short answer is, I have no idea. Many friends who have a voiceover agent "fell into it" while pursuing in a smaller market, such as Chicago, San Francisco or even New York. Well, no such fall for me to date. I did however attempt to send off a voiceover audition to a casting director recently. Failure ensued. Not in the performance, but in my technology crisis. Turns out the sound recorder on my Blackberry saves it as a file that can't be opened on anything other than a Blackberry. Also learned that the microphone for my PC is a joke. And not a funny one.

Lessons learned! So, any tips out there on getting into voiceover work? Do you really need a V.O. reel? And if I do, couldn't I just get some copy and record it myself? Anyone have a PC microphone that they recommend? I'm listening!

My Big Break

I love teaching. Not as much as I love acting, but man does my job have its perks! Number one perk being, school vacations! Yep, just like the kids, I'm on Spring Break!

Time off is just bliss... usually. I'm fine with one week, but go longer than that and I get... depressed. Sounds strange to even admit, but true. I get sad that I'm not running around being busy, and if it's not a busy time for me as an actress that fact is amplified, making me sadder! I am a woman who needs a schedule! Without it NOTHING gets done and I become a worthless pile of pajamas on the couch.

Actress and awesome friend Jen Nikolaisen got me in the routine of doing yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily goals. We used to email them to each other on Sunday nights and then check back in at the end of the week to see how we did. A very helpful technique! Thanks Jen! Expect my goals this Sunday night! I'm going to sleep in every day I can this week, but by golly I am going to get some stuff done! Happily!!

Act Like a Puppy!

In case you haven't heard, I have the world's greatest golden retriever, Bailey. Bailey is 12 and a half years handsome, and in recent years has been suffering from from arthritis. He has been taking a pain reliever (NSAID) called Metacam for over a year now. My vet hasn't expressed any concern over the use of the drug, but it's been bothering me lately. I wouldn't take a high dose of ibuprofen every day for the rest of my life. That would damage my organs, wouldn't it? So wouldn't it damage his?

Last night I did some research on natural and alternative therapies. I was heavily leaning towards one of these two products: FlexPet or Arthro-IonX. Both are over the counter and had very good reviews all around.

Looking for real humans with information, I posted on Facebook to see if anyone had opinions about these products. My friend Richard Morgain responded with a vote for a prescription injectable called Adequan . It's helped his cat tremendously and he swears by it. Then casting director and lover of animals Paul Palo, contacted me with another option. He's been working closely with Dr. Rachel Jones DVM (daughter of Quincy) and the effects of Microlight 830 laser on degenerative joint and bone problems in dogs and cats. This low level laser therapy has shown amazing results in pets and people in pain.

It's GREAT to have so many options now available to pet owners like me. What will Bailey do? Stay tuned!

Wacko Callback

OK, it's just plain cliche to complain about traffic in LA, but this afternoon's travels from the westside to Sherman Oaks, took an hour and 15 minutes. We're talking about an 18 mile trip. What is that??? And the fun didn't stop there! Nope, when I arrived seven minutes late to my commercial callback (Yes, I had a commercial callback! First one in... some time), the casting assistant informed me she'd just called my agent looking for me. Yikes! Is that all? No! I always have had faith that this city does indeed weed out the wackos. Not fool proof, I'm afraid. Ran into the biggest wacko I've ever had to work with minutes later at the callback. I hate to name call, but I was in a class with her and she managed to piss off every single person there. Never seen anything like it. Talk about getting thrown a curve ball right before the big moment. She approached me, of course. (Why?) I failed miserably at pretending I didn't know her. Busted. Barf. Callback went pretty well, though!

If I book it, do I have to start saying I like the valley? Nah!

Spring Cleaning!

Much like my friend and fellow actress Summer Harlow (who is awesome in "Nanny Interviews," a web-series due out later this year!), I have always liked to give my body and organs a break once or twice a year. I used to do the Master Cleanse (AKA lemonade diet).... which despite the criticisms it has attracted, I think is a great, effective, and cost effective way to get the job done. Well this year, my dependency on caffeine and just mental block against the idea of not eating for 10 days, is inspiring me to look for another alternative. And Summer Harlow has one!

Healthy America!!!

I think the hardest thing for me the past 24 hours is listening to the rash of misinformation regarding the healthcare reform legislation. Really intelligent people complaining about now having to deal with universal healthcare in our country. Sure, we're all busy, but if you have the time to post on Facebook about how our socialist President is dooming our country, why not take the time to actually read what you're bitching about? If you haven't read it yet, I urge you to read what was passed yesterday. Healthcare Reform 2010

No, we don't have universal healthcare today. Yes, you can keep your current coverage. And yes, it will cost money to provide access to health insurance for our millions of our fellow Americans who need it and deserve it.

It is obvious to me that it's a humanitarian issue, all people should have the right to be taken care of when they're sick. Or when they're not sick, but might get sick. Pretty sure our unalienable rights to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness included the right to stay alive and healthy without going broke.

Everyone has their own opinions on this, and if you're lucky enough to not have any of your own stories about how the U.S. healthcare system failed you or a loved one, maybe you can't see yet how monumental this is.

Healthcare Please!

Most women at least, probably remember when Christina Applegate was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2008. She underwent a double mastectomy at age 36 after she found a cancerous lump in one breast. This was significant to me because she had tested positive for the BRCA1 breast cancer gene, something that runs in my family. The testing for this gene is incredibly expensive, upwards of $3000. When my first cousin was diagnosed with breast cancer last year at age 38, and tested positive for the BRCA1 gene, I knew I had to get tested. Being uninsured, this was an obstacle. After dozens of emails and phone calls, I finally arranged to have my test done for free by a research lab in Canada and UCLA agreed to do my genetic counseling, also for free. The drawback? I was tested in August of 2009 and my results are still pending. Still waiting for the call.

The real drawback? Why should any woman, or person, in my situation be forced to go to such lengths to preserve and protect my health? And what if my test comes back positive? Regular breast MRI testing is imperative to detect cancerous cells in high-risk patients... also incredibly expensive.

This is just one reason why I am so excited about the healthcare legislation passing through Congress today. Today I am insured, but this legislation will help people around the country who suffer from pre-existing conditions and were previously categorized as uninsurable. Being sick shouldn't mean going broke, or going untreated. It's too expensive? So are two wars. But what we really can't afford is to be terrorized anymore by the healthcare industry.

It is a great day for America!! Now if Canada could just hurry things along on those test results...

Park Your Funny Here

At a friend's small birthday dinner last week, I met the quiet, rather unassuming Randall Park. Well, I had met once before, at around 4 AM, when we worked together on Working Bug's very funny short film Donation. But he was dressed as a homeless man and I was still waking up. This night, I immediately recognized him from several film and TV roles and a very funny K-Y Intense commercial, currently running. It was the night before his chemistry read for the Fox comedy pilot, "Tax Man" which he indeed, booked. I left thinking he was such a nice, intelligent guy. Then I looked him up on youtube and found out he is one of the funniest people on the planet. He does something really well, that far few funny people are ever any good at: stand up! I am such a critic of what's funny and I was seriously laughing out loud in my office. Randall has libraries of short films and web-series online and I recommend watching, well all of them! If you don't find him funny, your brain may not be working correctly.

I love seeing good people succeed and it's so inspiring when the person is as hard-working and prolific as Randall is. GO RANDALL!!!
